Spartan Beast Montana group photo

We recently conquered the Montana Spartan Beast with some great friends.  One of the joys of travel is combining it with friends.  When you can combine that with a great activity, it”ll truly be an unforgettable experience.

As a child of Montana, I was so excited to return to my old stomping grounds.   I came to conquer the mountains and obstacles that the Spartan Beast gives.  Our crew included Justin and I, and our friends Jeremiah and Claire.  Michelle was our support crew because she was out due to injury.

What is the Spartan Beast?

If you aren’t familiar with Spartan races, they are a hugely popular obstacle race with three distances with races held throughout the US and around the world.  The longest of the 3 is the Spartan Beast, ranging from 12-14 miles in length depending on the course.  Other races are the Sprint at 3-5 miles and the Super at 8-10.

Every course guarantees tons of dirty and challenging obstacles.  As a result, you will find plenty of hills to climb, and water obstacles to make sure you’re not getting too comfortable.  The competitive ranks go first, but the real camaraderie is found in the ranks of regular athletes, all struggling and cheering each other Justin carrying a log at Spartan Beastthrough the challenges and successes.

Why I Spartan Beast?

I have to tell you, I was a total tomboy as a girl.  I loved getting dirty, fording streams, climbing trees, and otherwise pitting myself against the great outdoors.  Spartan racing gives me a chance to feel that way again.  It doesn’t matter how dirty you get, how you look doing it, or what you have to do when you get back to work next week.  All that matters is overcoming each challenge as it is presented, and the encouragement of the Heather going under the barbed wire at the Spartan Beastpeople around you to get it done.

So, you’ve got an itch for adventure and want to combine it with a little travel?  I absolutely recommend you find a Spartan race (or something like it).  Grab a group of friends to conquer it with, and hit the road to get a little dirty.
